A Story About Project Management Standards is the PMBOK 7th Edition

Introduction

The PMBOK is the Project Management Body of Knowledge according to the Project Management Institute, PMI. The document contains a systematic approach to handling projects from inception to close out and decommissioning. Every several years, a new edition is published with changes to aid understanding by professionals. With the assumption that only few changes are made occasionally, it was an impressive shock to find out the rejuvenated structure and system of project management body of knowledge in the 7th Edition of the PMBOK.

Past Editions

In past editions, there were 10 knowledge areas with distinct frameworks and process of application. Each was accompanied by inputs, tools & techniques. In some cases, inputs, tools & techniques spread across multiple knowledge areas. For most, a study of the PMBOK gives a segment thinking in application.

7th Edition

Having reviewed the 7th Edition, it is clear that all previously known knowledge areas although slightly modified are well integrated into one. The new approach to the PMBOK is much like a story. In other words, a person does not really feel the transition from one knowledge area to another. It is not disjointed. If one is to compare to previous versions, then the 8 Project Performance Domain may be likened to the 10 previously and generally known Knowledge Areas.

The twist in the story is where these 8 project performance domains are to be applied in light of the Principles of Project Management. With this approach, professionals are expected to embody the principles of project management to be clear sighted in order to perform adequately in the domains. Furthermore, the tools and techniques have been simplified into a matrix format. This approach eliminates or limits a mental line between domains.

Key Takeaways

The manner with which useful tools & techniques have been collated and placed in a matrix is valuable. Models, methods and artifacts are what these tools & techniques are called. It serves as a checklist of helpful techniques and tools throughout the life cycle of a project.
