A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is the hierarchical subdivision of the expected outcomes of a project into smaller more manageable components.

Most projects run into issues when they are not adequately scoped or where they are not broken down into smaller more manageable items that make it easy for every item of work for the project to be included.

A process called decomposition is used to break down a project into more manageable sizes. The lowest level to which the WBS can get to is the ‘work package level1.

Also, a WBS does not include the actual activities to be carried out, e.g. Installation of Pipes or Casting of Foundation for construction projects and Arrangement of Decoration or Testing of Sound Systems for wedding planner projects etc. These items are not part of a WBS.

Hints:

An easy way to identify an item which is meant for the WBS is that they are Nouns, while Activities are Verbs and are meant for schedules or program of works.

Work Package 1: is the lowest level in the WBS Chart, and it is the level at which the cost and activity durations for the work of a project can be reliably estimated and managed.
